Dwelling Fire, 1 School Drive -- At 1448 hours on 14 December 2005, the Lancaster County Communication Center dispatched Station 3-11, Station 3-1 (Bareville), and 3-8 (Leola Ambulance) to dwelling fire at 1 School Drive in Upper Leacock Township.  Due to the time of day, staffing was limited, so additional companies were called.  Click Here for more information. Future Fire Fighters Club at Conestoga Valley Middle School -- On Tuesday, November 1, 2005, members of the ULFC kicked off another year of the future fire fighters club at the Conestoga Valley Middle School.  The club, entering it's second year, is facilitated by fire companies that serve the Conestoga Valley School District.  Those supporting the program are: Upper Leacock, Bareville, Bird-in-Hand, Eden, Lafayette, Ronks, West Earl, and Witmer Fire Companies.  All training is done at the middle school during the "club" activities time by volunteers from the individual companies.  Companies share the responsibilities for demonstrating and training in such topics as hose deployment, fire extinguisher use, vehicle rescue, tanker operations, aerial operations, fire aid, rope rescue, and trench rescue.  The goal of the program is to encourage young people to become involved in serving their community through the fire service.   One of the biggest challenges facing the volunteer fire service in Lancaster County is declining membership.  Hopefully this program will inspire these young people to join the organizations in their area and become active volunteers.  Below are a few photos from this event.  (Posted 11-15-05)

Upper Leacock Day at Cokeburg Fire Company --On Saturday, October 8, 2005, fifteen members and friends traveled four hours to visit our fire fighting friends in Cokeburg, PA.  ULFC State Representative Scott Boyd and his wife, along with CVFC State Representative Tim Solobay were also in attendance.  Cokeburg, located south of Pittsburg, is a small community of 705 residents.  The members of the CVFC invited the members of ULFC to visit and socialize as a thank you for the donation of the 1975 Seagrave in May 2004 (see related story Here).  Below are some photos from our visit:

Tim, who has been very active in getting surplus emergency services equipment into the hands of those in need, can be reached by following this link (T._Solobay).  If you have surplus equipment, and want to see it put to good use, please contact Tim and see if he can link you up to someone in need.     Upper Leacock Fire Company Chief Larry Miller tries out the driver's seat of the 1968 International / Howe engine that was replaced by the ULFC 1975 Seagrave.

Medical Forefront -- Asst. Chief Nelson Dagen recently underwent back surgery that is revolutionary in the practice of disk replacement surgery.  Thankfully, this surgery was successful, and now Chief Dagen is back to enjoying a "normal" life both at home and at the fire station.  The members are all very glad to have him back serving the community.  Click Here to read the Lancaster New Era story about Chief Dagen and this revolutionary surgery.   (Posted 8-28-05)

Seagrave Finds a New Home --  On Saturday, May 14, 2005, the Upper Leacock Fire Company officially donated the recently retired 1975 Seagrave to the Cokeburg Volunteer Fire Company.  Located in Cokeburg, Washington County.  Cokeburg is located about 24 miles west of Pittsburgh and 244 miles west of Leola.  The ULFC, after having only received bids from private collectors for the Seagrave, decided to donate the engine to a "needy" company.  Secretary Huber contacted State Representative Tim Solobay, an author of "Legislative Line" in the Pennsylvania Fireman and a volunteer firefighter from Washington County.  Tim has been instrumental in getting used but usable equipment to companies in need.  Tim has been working with the CVFC for some time to help bring them back from some financial hardships.
Firefighter Curtis Thompson and Fire Chief Matt Stauffer came to inspect the Seagrave.  After a test drive, they indicated it would be useful for their community.  The CVFC is currently operating a 1968 International / Howe engine and a 1972 Ford brush truck.  While the title transfer was taking place, surplus equipment including ladders, a deck gun, nozzles, and misc. fittings were loaded on the apparatus.  Our friends from Cokeburg left mid-afternoon, and after a five hour trip arrived safely in Cokeburg.

The members of the ULFC hope the Seagrave provides a boost to the fire fighting arsenal of the Washington County area.  (Posted 5-18-05)

Vehicle Accident with Entrapment -- On Monday, 7 February, 2004, fire units from Station 3-11, 3-1, and 4-10 along with ambulance 2-13 (Manheim Townhip) were dispatched to a vehicle accident involving entrapment at Rt. 23 and Market Square Road, Upper Leacock Township.  To read more about this incident, click Here (Posted 2-7-05)

EMS Tax in Upper Leacock -- On Thursday night, January 20, 2005, the township supervisors voted unanimously to impose a $25 EMS tax on all employees in Upper Leacock Township who earn greater than $12,000 per year.  Ten dollars of this money will continue to go to the Conestoga Valley School District.  The balance will be used to fund an estimated $160,000 budget shortfall for 2005.  While about 20 members of the Bareville and Upper Leacock Fire Companies lobbied the supervisors to increase the tax or direct this funding directly to the Companies, the supervisors accepted neither of these suggestions.  Unfortunately, the allowance in this tax are so diverse, the EMS name to the tax does not guarantee any of the money will go to what most citizens think of EMS services.  (Posted 1-31-05)
